ULYSSES European Odyssey
ULYSSES European Odyssey (UEO) was an epic project which took place from 2022-2024 across 18 cities in 16 countries, producing artistic responses in public spaces to social and cultural themes identified in the 18 episodes of James Joyce’s Ulysses. At the same time, a cycle of 18 public symposia were held in each city to produce 309 questions aimed at creating a new arts and society charter for Europe. The project also had 30 artist residencies which will contribute to a new book titled Will You Answer? 309 Questions from Europe.
Dublin Grand Arts and Society Symposium (GASS)
In June 2024, for Episode 17 of the project, ULYSSES European Odyssey came to Dublin for the Grand Arts and Society Symposium (GASS), which was held in the Long Room Hub of Trinity College Dublin. Prior to GASS, four other partner gatherings took place in Trieste (Oct 2022), Paris (February 2023), Zürich (July 2023) and Budapest (February 2024). GASS in Dublin (June 2024) was the fifth and final partners' gathering of the ULYSSES European Odyssey. GASS presented an opportunity for partners to reflect on, and respond to, the successes and failures of the overall project as they see it. GASS contained a strong central focus on the theme of justice - including the development of advocacy and activism across the two years of the project, mediated through the creativity and work produced in UEO.
